HOW TO GET TO

Japan’s rail network is well-organized, with clear English signage and helpful staff throughout the journey.
This route is the most reliable and popular way to reach Shiga Kogen

STEP 1

Narita Airport →Tokyo or Ueno

Airport express trains

After arriving at Narita Airport, follow signs
for JR Trains or the Keisei Line.

Train Options:

  •  Narita Express (N’EX) → Tokyo Station
  • Keisei Skyliner → Keisei-Ueno Station
    (short walk to JR Ueno)

Travel Time: 40-60 minutes

STEP 2

Tokyo or Ueno →Nagano

 

Train options: Hokuriku Shinkansen

From Tokyo or Ueno Station, transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen bound for Nagano. The Asama service is the easiest and most commonly used option.

Travel time: 90–100 minutes

Don’t worry, Shinkansen platforms are clearly numbered, and staff are always nearby to help!

STEP 3

Nagano Station → Shiga Kogen (Yama-no-eki)

Transport: Direct mountain bus
From Nagano Station, take a direct bus to Shiga Kogen Yama-no-eki (the main gateway into the resort area).

Travel Time: Approximately 90 minutes

Important to know:

  • Buses depart from the station’s east exit
  • This is the most straightforward route–no train transfers needed’
  • During winter, buses are timed to match major train arrivals
  • Drivers are familiar with major hotels and dropoff points within Shiga Kogen

TOKYO → NAGANO (HOKURIKU SHINKANSEN)

The historic red-brick façade of Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building as you leave central Tokyo, and Mount Asama, a prominent active volcano visible on clear days near Karuizawa.

NAGANO → TOGURA (SHINANO RAILWAY)

The Chikuma River running parallel to the tracks, along with orchard fields and rural towns in Chikuma City.

NAGANO → YUDANAKA (NAGANO DENTETSU LINE)

The upper reaches of the Chikuma River and quaint rural mountain towns approaching Yudanaka.

YUDANAKA → SHIGA KOGEN (MOUNTAIN BUS)

Steep alpine roads climbing into the mountains, with expansive highland scenery signaling your arrival in one of Japan’s largest ski areas.
